Mental Health

Mental health care is part of family medicine. You do not need to have a diagnosis before asking for help. Your physician can listen to what has been happening, assess your symptoms and work with you on a plan.

What to expect

Some concerns can be managed within family medicine, while others benefit from additional support or specialist care. Your physician may ask about your symptoms, daily functioning, physical health, medications and safety. Treatment may include education, practical strategies, medication, counselling resources or a referral, and follow-up is often important because symptoms and treatment response can change over time. You can share only what you are comfortable discussing — it is fine to begin by saying that you have not been feeling like yourself.

Appointments and urgent concerns

Book a dedicated appointment when possible so there is enough time to talk. Tell our staff if the concern is urgent. If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call 911 or go to an emergency department.

Coverage and fees

Medically necessary mental health care provided by a physician is generally covered with valid Alberta Health coverage. Private counselling, psychology services and medications may have separate costs, although other coverage or community programs may be available.
